Transponders

Transponders are found in many modern vehicles to guard against theft of cars. These small devices are connected to the key fob and contain an electronic chip that communicates with the car whenever it is within range. The chips utilize a code to identify the car and key.

The chip transmits the signal which is picked up by two coils positioned around the ignition barrel in the vehicle. The coils activate when the key is within reach and transmit a pulse of electromagnetic energy to the transponder chip. The chip then responds by sending back an individual identification number to the car. The unique code can then be used to unlock doors and begin the car.
