Renault has a long tradition of innovation. It was the first company to use remote central locking in a production vehicle. Renaults come with a complicated immobiliser, making it crucial to know the basics before trying to unlock your car without a key. Transponders

Transponders are a common feature in modern vehicles to deter theft of cars. These small devices, which are attached to the key fob, contain a chip and communicate with the car once it is within of. These chips use a unique code to identify the key, and also tell it which vehicle it is paired with.

The chip emits an electrical signal that is detected by two coils positioned around the barrels of ignition inside the vehicle. These coils are activated by the key and send a pulse electromagnetic energy to the chip. The chip responds by sending back an individual identification number to the car. The unique code is used to unlock the doors and start the engine.

In World War 2, a similar technology was employed to aid air traffic control to identify military aircrafts using radar. This type of chip is still in use in the aviation industry.

Up until recently the systems were thought to be unclone-proof. This was due to the fact that there were only 74 Quadrillion (74,000,000,000,000,000) possible codes for each transponder. But the technology behind these chips has since been upgraded and they are not completely clone-proof. This has made many locksmiths to upgrade their skills by learning to read, program, and write these more modern types.


Immobilisers

The Renaults are very complicated in the way that they operate when it comes to their immobilisers as well as keys. There are two main mechanisms that affect how a new key is programmed into the car. The older system uses an « kill switch » to turn off a crucial part of the car’s ignition mechanism if the correct key is not present. These are very delicate and will need a trained technician to correctly identify and fix the issue if they fail.

The newer system is easier to use. It utilizes rolling security codes and advanced cryptography to defeat copying of the code from the key or ECU. This is the code that will be used to replace keys we supply.

Certain models even come with an exclusive ring antenna which is not recognized by standard transponder scanners and is unique to the vehicle. This is extremely effective in preventing hotwiring and is also extremely difficult to bypass using a standard key or an emulator for transponders. We have a special product called the Renault Antenna Emulator (RAE) that can be used to circumvent this kind of immobiliser on Renault Clio phase 2 models as well as some Renault commercial vehicles fitted with ID46 transponders.
